Luminarium Volunteer Opportunity
Blyth Celebrates are looking for a dedicated team of volunteers to help with the audience experience of the amazing free Luminarium experience in Blyth Market Place between Saturday 25 – Tuesday 28 October.
This half-term, Blyth Market Place will be transformed into a glowing labyrinth of light and colour as Myriad, a Luminarium by Architects of Air, comes to Blyth’s Market Place.
Luminarium is part of the Blyth Celebrates programme of events and is free for families and visitors of all ages. The team of volunteers will play a key role in making this a special and memorable experience for visitors. If you are over 18 years old, enjoy meeting people and being part of a team, this is the volunteering opportunity for you! Volunteer shifts will be between 4 – 6 hours and roles will vary during each shift, from meeting and welcoming people when they arrive, to helping to supervise the different spaces inside the Luminarium.

What will the role involve?
During a shift you may have different roles including meeting and greeting visitors, checking pre-booked tickets, managing ticket bookings on the day, supervising the different areas within the inflated structure, or saying goodbye and telling visitors about the Blyth Celebrates programme. Volunteers will move around every 30 – 40 minutes so there is variety in your shift and no-one is covering the same role for too long. Breaks will be timetabled for each volunteer.
Do I need to have any volunteer experience already?
No you don’t, we’ll provide training. If you enjoy meeting people and being involved with a team, volunteering can be such a rewarding experience and a great way to make friends and meet people in your community.
How long will I be needed each day?
Volunteers will be needed for a minimum of 4 hours each day between 9.30am – 5pm. We will confirm shift times in advance so you can plan your day.
Do I have to be available for all the dates?
Ideally we’d like most volunteers to be available for at least 2 days but if you want to be involved and can only do one day, that’s also fine. Please complete the Volunteer Form and let us know which dates you will be available.
When will I find out if I am needed?
We will be in touch as soon as we can – emails are checked every weekday. If you are completing a printed form, it may be a couple of days before we receive the form and we’ll contact you as soon as we can.
We are aiming to confirm everyone’s shifts by Friday 17 October. We will be asking everyone to be patient as there may be some last minute changes if anyone has to cancel a shift due to unforeseen circumstances.
Will I get training?
Yes. Training will take place on Friday 24 October at 2pm and will last approx. 1 hour.
I have a disability – can I still volunteer?
Volunteers will need to be able to stand for up to 30 minutes at a time. We’re sorry, no wheelchairs, walking aids or assistance dogs are allowed inside the structure. If you have any questions, please do contact us so we can discuss options for supporting you.
What do I need to wear?
Warm clothing. Inside the structure will be about the same temperature as outside. You will be provided with a branded Blyth Celebrates blue hi-vis vest to wear on top of your coat or jacket so that visitors know you are part of the event team. If you are supervising an area inside the structure, you will have to remove your shoes so warm, thick socks or wearing more than one pair are recommended if you have them.
Will a rest space, toilets and refreshments be provided for volunteers?
Yes. There will be room available with hot drinks, water, and refreshments and access to toilets.
Will the event go ahead if it’s bad weather?
The event can go ahead in most weather. However, if we need to cancel any of the dates, or part of a day due to poor weather, we will inform volunteers as soon as we can.
Will parking be provided?
If you need to drive to Blyth, there is free all day parking in Simpson Street Car Park, NE24 1AX (also known as Keel Row car park), which is a couple of minutes walk from the Market Place.
How old do I need to be?
Volunteers need to be over 18 years old. If you want to volunteer with another family member, they also need to be over 18 years old and they need to complete a volunteer sign up form. We will do our best to make sure you are given the same shift times.
How do I sign up?
If you would like to volunteer, please complete this Volunteer Form
If you have any questions, please blythcelebrates@northumberland.gov.uk and let us know your query, or if you would like to speak to a member of the team, please leave a contact telephone number and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
We look forward to hearing from you!
