Contractor appointed to work on major cinema and leisure complex in Northumberland
A contractor has been appointed to bring forward a new five-screen cinema and leisure complex in Ashington.
Northumberland County Council’s Cabinet has confirmed the appointment of Robertson Construction North East by Advance Northumberland to complete the scheme at Portland Park, which forms part of the £36m transformation of the town centre.
Planning approval was granted last year and construction is due to commence shortly.
The scheme will include two restaurant units and a family-orientated ‘competitive socialising’ space alongside the cinema.
Family-owned independent operator REEL Cinemas will operate the venue, which is expected to attract between 125,000 and 157,000 visits each year.
Neil Kennedy, regional managing director, Robertson Construction North East, said: “We have been chosen to play an important role in the ongoing regeneration of Ashington, creating a high-quality development that will boost vibrancy, footfall, and local spending. Projects like this have the potential to transform a community, and we look forward to delivering meaningful local benefits throughout the process that contribute to the town’s long-term growth.”
Awarded through the Procure Partnerships Framework, the project is being developed by Advance Northumberland and is being funded by the UK Government’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Northumberland County Council, and Advance Northumberland.
Councillor Richard Wearmouth, cabinet member for business, growth and regeneration, added: “The cinema and leisure complex represents a significant investment in Portland Park, strengthening the town centre as a destination for entertainment, dining and socialising.
“It’s a real vote of confidence for Ashington, building on the wider regeneration in the area including a new rail station and passenger rail line and a new college.”
